Bed bugs - Cimex Lectularius

Appearance

  • 4-5mm long, oval and flattened from back to underside, red to brown in colour.
  • Well-developed legs, but wings absent.
  • Mouthparts adapted for piercing the skin.

Habitat

  • Nocturnal by nature but may be seen in the day, especially large infestations.
  • Cracks and crevices are ideal harbourage areas for this pest, behind peeling  wallpaper, cracked plaster and within electrical sockets.
  • Normally introduced to a premise, a process known as cross-infestation, via luggage etc of a travelling host.
  • Despite their name, bed bugs can be found in any items of furniture or belongings where the host is in situ for long periods of time, such as sofas etc.
  • Can also infest an area from adjoining properties via migrating through partition  walls.

Lifecycle

  • Female will lay eggs, which are 1mm long, white and elongated, with 200-500 laid over a two-month period in batches of 10-50.
  • Complete life cycle takes 2-4 months.
  • If no host is available, an adult bed bug can live for up to a year without food

The first signs of bedbugs will be bite marks around your neck, shoulders, arms and legs. on inspection of your bedding you will often see sports of blook on your bedding from the bites or small brown spots which will be bed bug droppings. you may also find eggs and eggs shells which are small and pale yellow.

Despite the name bed bugs don't just live in your bed. They will take up residence just about anywhere including in the seams of your upholstery, in draw joints, cracks of wood and in furniture. 

They also do not discriminate, you may find them in a 5 star hotel, public transport, in your car, even at the library!

Bed bugs can live for several months without a meal, They can also lay between 1-5 eggs per day and up for 500 in its lifetime.
